Reflection of Panel 22 of Jacob Lawrence’s Migration series
As I reflect on Jacob Lawrence's artwork I recognize that these thoughtful and innovative pieces were created during the African American migration, widely known as 'The Great Migration'. This migration took place while the African Americans migrated from Rural America to Urban America. Jacob Lawrence, who was part of the Migration, reflected on his artwork through 60 different panels by highlighting and throwing emphasis on each intricate detail. He tried to communicate what was happening in his surroundings through his art. His art showcases different scenes from the Migration such as, how women got more education opportunities in Urban America, there were higher chances of employment and how migrants migrated in large numbers for a better chance at life. He also showcased the negative problems like how women had to work excessively during those times and how it was difficult to access food as farmers were facing an infestation crisis of crops in their farms. Jacob Lawrence used Dynamic cubism to showcase and express his perspectives and thoughts through artistic creations. Dynamic cubism is characterized by its use of bold vibrant colours, strong geometric forms and exaggerated gestures. While trying to replicate his iconic masterpieces, some obstacles I faced were trying to create the exact shades and colours while experimenting with oil pastels. Although there were challenges, I am proud of my Dynamic cubist artwork inspired by a great artist like Jacob Lawrence.
